Pitch a product

Pitching a product to the class in a team presentation

This lesson tasks students with putting together a team presentation for a new Nintendo Wii product.

The activity teaches learners about product idea generation and will also equip them with communication and entrepreneurial skills for “selling” their creations. It can act as a stand-alone lesson, or as part of a larger project along with our Product analysis and Marketing your product activities.

This is one of a set of resources developed to aid the class teaching of the secondary national curriculum, particularly KS3. It has been designed to support the delivery of key topics within design and technology (DT).

Activity: Pitching a product to your class in a team presentation

This activity focuses on designing and pitching a new product idea for the Nintendo Wii.

Working as teams, students will view the Make Your Pitch presentation, using the slides as a guide for brainstorming product ideas. These ideas can be as creative as students like and be inspired by their own personal hobbies (such as sports).

Students will work together to whittle down their ideas based on what has the greatest commercial potential, and what’s most appropriate for the Wii image and branding. Once they’ve chose a new product to create, students will then create a short two-minute script for an audio pitch, which will be presented to the class for feedback.

The engineering context

When designing new products, engineers will often need the buy-in from senior management and investors so that they can receive approval and funding for their work. As such, presentation and communication skills are vital for engineers. Understanding business considerations such as commerciality is also important, as products will need to attract customers in order to be successful.

Suggested learning outcomes

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain why it is important to know what a user wants when designing and marketing a product. As a team, they’ll also be able to create a ‘pitch’ aimed at a specific user group or client.

The activity sheet includes teachers’ notes, useful web links, and links (where appropriate) to the national curriculum in each of the four devolved nations; England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

All activity sheets and supporting resources are free to download (including the video), and all the documents are fully editable, so you can tailor them to your class’s and your schools’ needs.
