IET Faraday® Challenge
Introducing the next generation to tackling real-world engineering challenges through creativity, critical thinking, hands-on problem solving and teamwork.
The challenge offers a flexible and accessible way for teachers, volunteers and community groups to deliver engaging STEM learning.
This years IET Faraday® Challenge theme is centred around Net Zero. Young people can design engineering prototypes and enter this years competition with a chance to win one of three awards.
Young people are challenged to think creatively, work in teams and develop solutions to engineering problems in the world around them.
It can be run as a full day or across five sessions, and no prior engineering or subject knowledge is needed.
An international activity, the IET Faraday® Challenge gives young people the opportunity to be part of something big, while exploring how engineering careers support the world they live in.
Designed to be inclusive and appropriate for all young people, the IET Faraday® Challenge is especially well suited for young people who prefer hands-on learning.

Who can participate?
The challenge is designed for six teams of six young people aged 10 - 15 years, and can be delivered by teachers, volunteers, community groups and others anywhere in the world.
No background knowledge needed, we will provide all of the information you need, including the video briefing and a step-by-step guide to delivering the challenge.
What materials do I need?
Our kit list tells you exactly what you need and where you can source it. Once assembled, your kit can be used again and again.
We have a number of subsidised kits available for those in need. Challenge leaders in the UK can apply for a subsidised kit when registering.

The IET Faraday® Challenge Awards
After you register, you’ll receive a link to submit your winning team’s prototype for recognition in the IET Faraday® Challenge Awards.
There are three awards this season, the Sustainability Award, the Future Cities and Innovation Award and the Technology for Good award.
Submissions are accepted 1 October 2026 - 14 May 2027.
Submissions are reviewed by engineering experts, and winners will be announced 11 June 2027.
