Activity: Write a poem to Santa about the oceans
This poem is all about the mysteries of the deep. Amazingly, we have only explored 5% of the world’s oceans! This fun activity could spark a discussion around habitats, climate change, creative writing and the use of adjectives.
After reading this poem, can you add another verse? You could think about the animals you have seen in the sea or the things you have discovered while walking along a beach.
This resource is ideal for children aged 11 – 14. However, younger children may like to join in and work with the rhyming language.
The poem
Two thirds of the planet is covered in sea
And strange as it seems, that fraction is me!
For we are the same
Two thirds made of water
Not a half, not an eighth, nor even a quarter.
And perhaps this is why I have a connection,
I want to learn more, about the seas and the ocean
The trenches so deep that the creatures make light
The parts of our planet far beyond human sight.
The oceans so full of mystery and wonder
Down in the depths, travelling under
Under the waters, teeming with life
Then darkness and depths like pitch black of night.
