For parents - FIRST® LEGO® League Discover

FIRST® LEGO® League Discover has an amazing impact on the young people who get involved.

FIRST® LEGO® League Discover is an in-class STEM programme designed to be run by class teachers. Your child will be taken on a themed mission to develop their STEM skills, all within the comfort of their classroom with their teacher.

Most of the FIRST® LEGO® League Discover activities take place in school, and your child will likely come home with lots of exciting things to tell you about their learning through Discovery! As part of the classroom set, the school will receive a Discover More pack comprising of two sets of Six Bricks for every child to develop their learning further with you at home. There are lots of activities online at LEGO® Education that you can also try out at home. Have a look at the how it works page for a bit more information on what Six Bricks are.

Six Top Tips for supporting your child with FIRST® LEGO® League Discover at home

Talk, talk, talk...

Ask open questions, encourage your child to ask their own questions, discuss ideas together, encourage your child to talk through their problem-solving. Communication and discussion are fantastic learning tools and FIRST® LEGO® League Discover works perfectly to develop these. Examples of open questions include:

  • “What have you made?”
  • “Why have you done that?”
  • “Tell me about…”
  • “Why do you think…?”
  • “What could we do to solve that?”
  • “How could we make that even better?”

Step back

It’s natural to want to help your child if they are finding a task challenging, but to develop their perseverance and problem-solving skills try taking a step back and asking some open questions to support them to become independent with their learning.

Use online resources

Your child will quickly become masters at the Six Bricks activities, and there are hundreds more available online to keep them busy and engaged!

Use positive language

Praise your child’s achievements and ideas to encourage them to build their confidence and get even more creative! Tell them that what they are doing is ‘engineering’. We are trying to dismantle perceptions and stereotypes, and want to encourage every child to believe that they could be an engineer and it starts at this age!!

Have fun!

The Six Bricks are not meant to be a boring chore or seen as compulsory homework – we’re sure your child will come home asking to use their Six Bricks with you! Have fun, experiment, play, talk and build together!

Come to the Celebration Event!

This will be a fun celebration to finish the programme which gives your child the opportunity to showcase their learning and their new skills. Your child will demonstrate their building skills and explain their ideas to all the adults who come along. They will receive a FIRST® LEGO® League Discover participation certificate to remember their day!
