Write a poem to Santa

Creative writing activity to use poetry skills and complete the fun activity sheet.

In this exercise, you’ll have the opportunity to use your fantastic poetry skills.

The poem for primary school children focuses on Santa Claus and the magic of following your ambition to think about how you can use your skills and work in a job you love.

First, read the poems, then add your own final verse/s.

When you are completing the poems try and write in a similar style and use descriptive language.

The poem

Santa sat down, in his big red sweater,
And said “boys and girls you must write me a letter.
I want to find out what you want to be
When you’re bigger, and older, and grown up like me.

Are you good at experiments, or teamwork with friends?
Are you brilliant with numbers, or at playing pretend?
Do you enjoy solving problems and puzzles in school?
Engineers do all this and what’s more, they’re cool!

Maybe you’ll help sick animals get better as a vet,
Be a marine biologist in the seas, getting wet!
Off ground in the skies, the pilot takes flight,
Flying passengers by day and cargo by night.

Through the science, DT and maths learned at school,
You’re working on some awesome brain fuel!
What’s your dream job? What’s your big goal?
Let me know in a poem, send it to The North Pole…”
