FIRST® LEGO® League Future Edition

Find out more about the exciting changes happening with FIRST® LEGO® League.

FIRST® LEGO® League Future Edition is designed for multiple-team facilitation, making it easy for one teacher or coach to run several teams in a single classroom/learning environment with less prep and management and more students actively participating.

This enhanced experience uses LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI kits. Which also includes teacher resources, LEGO bricks, hardware and coding tools to help make computer science a practical and engaging part of students' everyday learning.

Futures Edition encourages participation from every student, including those who may not have previously seen themselves in robotics or STEM.

What’s new about the Future Edition?

FIRST® LEGO® League will retain the fun and thrill our community cherishes, with new features that make it more accessible and in alignment with next-gen learning.

Game and project

Game, matches, judging, project-work, ceremonies, etc.

Volunteer and venue requirements

Space and peoples' resources will still be crucial to ensure a great experience.

Overall event timing

The program will run on the same annual timeline that you are used to.

Gracious Professionalism®

At the heart of everything we do as always!

The Futures Edition focuses on Teams enjoying games, matches and project work.

The new team experience is centred around four new roles:

Driver role

The Driver uses a controller to navigate a driving base around the field, collecting and delivering game elements.

Operator role

The Operator designs and uses a mechanical tool to handle and trigger game elements in their area.

Technician role

The Technician role designs and uses a robotic tool to handle and trigger game elements in their area and around the field.

Specialist role

The Specialist controls the team device and one or more robotic game elements on the field.

A new team experience

Students will play the game with the robotic and mechanical tools they built and developed:

Wireless hardware with built-in, paired functions

For the first time ever, FIRST® LEGO® League will utilise wireless hardware elements including sensors, motors, and a wireless controller – allowing us greater flexibility, accessibility, and variability.

Game models with embedded hardware

We have utilised this system of hardware, splitting its use between team robotic solutions and motorised game models – making them interactive and adding a new layer of strategy to the matches.

Semi-cooperative matches on a shared game field

Another new experience in FIRST® LEGO® League is the introduction of semi-cooperative gameplay, where teams compete side-by-side on a shared field that rewards coordination and collaboration during the 2.5-minute game.

Unique player roles with guided missions

All of these evolutions are supported by four unique team roles: Driver, Operator, Technician and Specialist.
